FTA Pavilion at Food Taipei:

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) helped set up an FTA Pavilion at last year's Tea and Wine Exhibition from Nov. 24 to 27 in an effort to promote imports from countries with which Taiwan has signed free trade agreements. The pavilion saw products from Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala as well as merchandises from 11 companies located in the nations of Taiwan's diplomatic allies in Central and South America. The promotional campaign was a success as Taiwan consumers got a better understanding of food products from the three countries, especially coffee, chili sauce, and canned chicken soup. To follow last year's success, TAITRA will again set up an FTA pavilion at Food Taipei this year where exhibitors from Panama, Guatemala and Nicaragua will showcase their products.

A delegation of Panama's industry and commerce ministry will have a presence at the pavilion. The group includes the following companies: Alisina, S.A.; Chiguiri, S.A.; Conservas de Antano, S.A.; Conservas Panamenas Selectas, S.A.; Farallon Aguaculture, S.A.; Industrias Alimenticias Doraz, S.A.; and Panafrut, S.A. Another five companies from the country, making such products as coffee, seafood, sauces, juices and soups, will also be in the show.

In the Guatemala pavilion will be such firms as Avestruces Patas Largas; CAFCOM, S.A.; Comercial Corban, S.A.; and Zacate de Te de Limon, S.A.

And the Nicaragua pavilion will feature such firms as Coopagro R.L.; Industrial Comercial San Martin, S.A.; Matadero Central, S.A.; and Tabacos Puros de Nicaragua, S.A.

(Photo/SHU-SHENG)
SHU-SHENG

Shu-Sheng is situated in Houli, Taichung County. Thanks to the dry and sunny climate and good irrigation in the area, Houli is ideally suited for growing imported grape varieties.

Shu-Sheng has been growing grapes and making wine for almost half a century and has witnessed the transformation of Taiwan's wine industry from a monopoly to a liberalized market.

1957, the Golden Muscat variety, which is resistant to diseases and insect pests, was imported from the Americas and planted experimentally in Taichung and Changhua Counties. Shu-Sheng experimented with these species and eventually developed tasteful wines from these ingredients.

The Shu-Sheug Red Wine, for example, is developed from the Black Queen species. Wine made of this special grape has a special aroma, a slightly tart taste with a smooth feel. The wine goes well with chicken and other red meats with slightly strong sauces.

Other wines made by Shu-Sheng include Enjoy, Golden Muscat White Wine, Ice Mode and Golden Muscat.
